By this date, payment apps are instructed by the NPCI to deactivate inactive UPI IDs

Some users may soon be unable to use third-party applications like Google Pay, PhonePe, and PayTM to conduct UPI payments. For accounts that have not been used for more than a year, banks and third-party applications have been instructed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to discontinue UPI services. This implies that your UPI account will be frozen and you won’t be able to use it if you haven’t used it for transactions in more than a year. This is scheduled to begin on December 31, 2023. The modification aims to improve and streamline UPI ID use by ensuring that only frequently used UPI IDs remain active. The guidance is a preemptive step to raise the security and effectiveness of the UPI ecosystem.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-285538″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/theindiaprint.com-argentina-overtakes-brazil-in-the-2026-world-cup-qualifier-uruguay-march-forward-a-750×412.jpg” alt=”theindiaprint.com argentina overtakes brazil in the 2026 world cup qualifier uruguay march forward a” width=”1566″ height=”860″ title=”By this date, payment apps are instructed by the NPCI to deactivate inactive UPI IDs 3″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/theindiaprint.com-argentina-overtakes-brazil-in-the-2026-world-cup-qualifier-uruguay-march-forward-a-750×412.jpg 750w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/theindiaprint.com-argentina-overtakes-brazil-in-the-2026-world-cup-qualifier-uruguay-march-forward-a-768×422.jpg 768w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/theindiaprint.com-argentina-overtakes-brazil-in-the-2026-world-cup-qualifier-uruguay-march-forward-a-150×82.jpg 150w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/theindiaprint.com-argentina-overtakes-brazil-in-the-2026-world-cup-qualifier-uruguay-march-forward-a.jpg 999w” sizes=”(max-width: 1566px) 100vw, 1566px” />

According to the NPCI, it is hoped that this move would improve UPI transaction security. Furthermore, a great deal of erroneous transactions will be avoided. As per the NPCI’s directions, all apps and banks will henceforth verify the UPI ID and associated mobile number of dormant customers. If there isn’t a credit or debit for a year, the UPI ID will be closed.

This action is being conducted in response to many complaints that the NPCI has allegedly received about faulty transactions. One of the main causes of this is that people routinely change their cell number but neglect to update the associated UPI ID. The UPI is still active there even if this number has been assigned to someone else. In this case, the individual who currently has the money will receive any funds transferred to that number. The NPCI is now initiating this action since several incidents of this kind have been documented.
